New Year, New Updates

The Roundhouse Aquarium has been updating its various tanks and displays as well as continuing its fundraising efforts in order to continue to spread oceanic and environmental awareness. We have raised almost half of our goal of $100,000! Thank you for your continued support. We truly appreciate all of the year-end donations. If you donated over $100, please come in to the Roundhouse to see your name on the Member board.

A volunteer’s Journey

by Volunteer Board President Shelby Smith

I remember the first day I walked into the Roundhouse Aquarium; it was a whole new world I was waiting to experience. I’ve always wanted to be a part of an organization that not only gave back to the community but also to the environment and the animals that lived in it. My best friend had told me about the aquarium and I didn’t hesitate for a second that I wanted to join. I was beyond ecstatic to go through the training even though it was just covering all the basics. And from that day, I have enjoyed my time at the aquarium. To me, it’s not just a place to volunteer, it’s my second home. I have enjoyed every second cleaning tanks, feeding fish and even cleaning the protein skimmers (filter for fishy poop). I felt empowered by what I was doing. I know for most, volunteering looks good on your college application, but it becomes more than that, it becomes a part of you who are. Giving back is the best feeling. My experience at the Roundhouse will continue until the day I leave for college and, of course, whenever I come to visit. I have learned so much about myself and what I was capable of doing; I learned that I could dedicate my time to a good cause and to be responsible for lives of others even if they are fish. I have also been given to chance to teach others about our environment. I could never has asked for a better experience than what given at the Roundhouse, and by far, it was totally worth sitting through those two days of training.
