December Creature Feature

Market Squid

Description: Humans often refer to market squid as “calamari”. Squid are in the cephalopod class and are related to octopuses and cuttlefish. They have 8 arms lined with suction cups and two longer tentacles with suction cups at the end that they use to grab food and bring it in to their beak. Market squid can squirt out ink in order to confuse predators. They grow to be no more than 12 inches long and are most likely the most abundant cephalopod along the central California coast.

Diet: Market squid eat crustaceans and small fishes.

Where they are Found: Common market squid are found in most coastal waters in the Pacific Ocean.

WOW!!! Market squid only live for about three years. They have huge mating orgies by the thousands! The females lay many long cylindrical eggs and then die soon after.
