Attention Teachers and Parents:
The Roundhouse is now booking field trips for the 2008-2009 school year!
Our state standard aligned field trips are a great way to give your students a hands-on, experiential, lesson about the marine environment, and how humans interact with it. We have 1-hour, 3-hour, and outreach programs available to fit your needs.
Ask if your school qualifies for a free grant-funded field trip!

Creature Feature for June !!

Thornback Ray
Description: Thornback rays are a round shaped fish with a flattened body. They are typically brown in color and can grow to be over 3 feet in length. These rays can be distinguished by three rows of “thorns” found on their back and tail. They are usually found burrowed on sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow, quiet waters.
Defense: Thornback rays have sharp, protective spines on their backs and tails and they also have the ability to flip sand over their backs to camouflage.
Range: There are three species of thornbacks but only one is found in California where it is a native fish. It is often referred to as the California or Pacific thornback .
Feeding: These fish feed on sand dwelling invertebrates such as worms, crabs, shrimps and clams.
WOW!!! Unlike most rays, thornbacks do not have stingers!

Summer is Here!!
Summer is upon us and here at the Roundhouse, we know how to make the summer fun! We have an amazing summer camp program for kids ages 4-14 and we have summer volunteer and internship opportunities for students ages 14-25! Our Summer Science Sea Camp incorporates the fun of the beach with the wonders of the ocean to make our program not only fun, but informative. Some of the exciting adventures we have planned for summer camp include learning about our local animals by fishing off of the pier. We also learn about waves and how they form and then learn how to surf and kayak. We dissect squid, learn about shells, sharks, sea turtles and more. We explore dolphins and whales and even have a program where kids can sleep with the sharks overnight!!! There are opportunities for younger kids as well through our Mini Marine Explorer camps. Come join us for SpongeBob and Patrick Day, Silly Shark Day and many others.
If you are too old for summer camp, but need something to keep you busy over summer, check out our summer camp volunteer program. You get to assist the counselors inside the aquarium and outside at the beach. You might even able to catch a wave or two with the campers!! This fun and exciting opportunity is a great way to get your high school community service hours.
If you are in college and are interested in Marine Biology or Environmental Science or are just looking for a fun and educational way to spend you summer, then check out our internship program. This program is geared towards college students ages 18 and over. Interns will gain practical teaching experience and have a great time learning about marine life. So, keep your summer hot and come join us for fun, friends and adventure at the Roundhouse Aquarium!
World Ocean Day is June 8th!
This years theme is, “Helping our climate/ helping our Ocean.” Be sure and celebrate the ocean with us. We will have crafts, stories, plankton tows, and fun presentations here at the Roundhouse Aquarium. The ocean is vital to our existence. It provides us with most of the oxygen we need to survive, helps regulate our climate, and provides us with breathtaking sunsets. Please be sure to care for the ocean by doing simple things like throwing away your trash so that it does not go into the stormdrains, picking up after your pet, reducing the trash you produce, and recycling. Make sure to keep the ocean clean for yourself and for future generations!
